Standing on Stone Tablets
from 9/1/2003
Labor Day beckons me to break a sweat
over reading I haven't done yet.
Hunger beckons me to go out for groceries.
Wal-Mart may be open, but the pharmacy is closed.
I'm glad someone's taking a stand over more
than the shallowness of the color of our clothes.
It's what the fabrics made of
and how easily it fades out,
not the current popular shade of brown.
Goodness goes against the grain.
That's why it's so hard for Clorox to remove the stains.
I realize I got off on a tangent of half-rhyming metaphors.
It's just I see everyone taking stands,
but I'm not sure what they stand for.
Most times, they serve little more than to make our legs tired.
The Red Badge of Courage will not be acquired
if we wear ourselves out fighting the wrong fires.
